Lower Back and Buttock Pain

3 conditions that cause backache and pelvic pain to occur simultaneously

Not sure why you’re experiencing backache and pelvic pain at the same time? With direct access to physical therapy, you can get a comprehensive analysis of your physical condition. Once your physical therapist understands the source of your pain, they can offer tailored pain management treatments designed to provide rapid relief. Learning about some conditions that could be causing your pain may provide a better understanding of your own condition and how physical therapy can help you.

3 conditions that could be causing your backaches and pelvic pain

  • Pregnancy Studies estimate that about 50% of pregnant women will experience some kind of lower back pain during their pregnancies or the postpartum period. Pelvic pain is relatively common during pregnancy as well. This pain may be partially caused by hormonal changes. When you’re pregnant, your body releases hormones such as relaxin that serve to relax your muscles. While this can sometimes help reduce pain, it can also lead to further discomfort. The muscles throughout the back play a crucial role in supporting your body while you’re standing upright. When these muscles get too relaxed, the weight that is usually supported by those muscles may shift to your lower back and pelvis. The increased pressure can create painful strain. If you are experiencing constant backaches and pelvic pain while pregnant, a physical therapist can work with you to find stretches and other treatment methods to ease your discomfort.
  • Endometriosis — Endometriosis occurs when uterine tissue grows outside of the uterus. This condition can lead to pain in your abdomen, pelvis and lower back. If you have endometriosis, you may also experience more cramping and heavier bleeding than usual during your period. Endometriosis is typically managed with medication. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to alleviate the symptoms.
  • Joint dysfunction — The sacroiliac joint keeps the spine and pelvis connected. When this joint becomes injured or inflamed, it can lead to pain in the surrounding area. If you’re experiencing SI joint dysfunction, you may feel pain and stiffness in your lower back and pelvis.
